At Nuestra Tierra Conservation Project, we believe in the power of community and the importance of preserving the natural and cultural heritage that makes our country so unique. That’s why we’re thrilled to share our involvement in “The Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip Film,” an inspiring journey across the American West that shines a spotlight on the urgent need to protect our national monuments.
An Epic Journey Across the West
Imagine a road trip that takes you from the rugged landscapes of Colorado to the sun-soaked valleys of California. Now, picture this journey with a purpose—to advocate for the permanent protection of our U.S. National Monuments, which are currently at risk from destructive resource development. This is the essence of the Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip, a breathtaking expedition that brought together photographers, advocates, and leaders from The Conservation Alliance, Flickr, Rivian, and Nuestra Tierra.
Our team set out on this epic journey with a mission: to raise awareness about the threats facing these national treasures and to rally support for their preservation. Along the way, we met with local business leaders, elected officials, on-the-ground champions, community members, and recreationalists—all of whom share our passion for protecting the lands that define our history and culture.
Witnessing the Beauty of Our Public Lands
As we traveled from state to state, we were continually awestruck by the raw beauty and diversity of the landscapes we encountered. The majestic buttes of the Dolores River, the sacred ancestral homelands of the Grand Canyon, the iconic Joshua tree forests in Avi Kwa Ame, and the vibrant desert sunsets that paint the Chuckwalla Valley—each scene was a reminder of why these places must be preserved.
In the San Gabriel Mountains, we witnessed the heartwarming sight of people from all walks of life embracing the outdoors, connecting with nature, and finding solace in these protected spaces. These moments reinforced our belief that public lands are more than just physical spaces; they are integral to our well-being, our economy, and our way of life.
Why Protecting National Monuments Matters
The Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip is about more than just admiring the beauty of our natural world. It’s about taking a stand against the threats posed by resource development that could forever alter these landscapes. It’s about recognizing that protecting public lands is essential not only for environmental reasons but also for the cultural, economic, and recreational benefits they provide to communities across the country.
Our journey proved that when we protect our public lands, we protect the very fabric of our society. These monuments are living symbols of our heritage, our resilience, and our collective commitment to safeguarding the places that tell the story of who we are.
